January Wardrobe Reset

Spring & Autumn are not the only exuse to have a clear out of your wardrobe and refresh. Early January can be a great time to review our winter wardrobe. Expecially as we are often putting christmas jumpers and sequin dresses away for next Christmas. With the Janurary sales in full swing, it makes sence to do a mini (or large) wardobe detox to find out where the gaps are. Heres all my advice on how to start a wardrobe detox and plan for the January sale.

A few of my Christmas pieces 2024

Start by looking at the items you wore. Can you wear them again before Spring? You may want some red for valentines for example. Or do you have a big birthday to plan for? Keep those items in ind, before you pack it all away.

Now look at all the items you didn’t wear. Are there pieces you thought you’d wear and never did? Ask yourself why. Was it because:

  • It didn’t fit right

  • It's broke or damaged

  • It worn out and faded

  • It doesn’t go with anything

  • It’ the wrong colour or shape

If it ticks any of these, it may be time to get rid. If it’s broken, will you fix it and when? If it’s a size issue, can it go to the tailor? Don’t be afraid to let it go. I’m sure you have many things you do wear.

Have a notepad when doing a detox. You may have to get rid of something and need to replace it. This could be basics like tshirts, or it could be your Christmas jumper that has seen a few years. Make a note and prioritise the items that most need replacing the soonest.

In regards to reds, sequins and sparkle. You don’t need to wait till christmas to wear these again. Sparkle, metalics and sequin are used more and more all year through. If you have sequin, be mindful of their environmental impact. Can it be re-worn, recycled or sold on Vinted for example. Or maybe they just need storing well so you can wear it again and again each?

Get the best out of the sales.

Heres are my top tips on shopping the sales.

  1. Once you have done a wardrobe detox and made notes, you can now shop knowing what you actually need. This is the best place to start. How many of you have randomly bought items in the sale that sit in your wardrobe with the label in and never get worn???

  2. Take your colour wallet with you or download a digital one (ask me for more details). Buying the colour that suits you means you're also buying colours that suit your wardrobe. You know you will have items that go with your new purchase.

  3. Consider your shape and scale. Is it the right cut & pattern for you?  You don’t need to buy the latest trend (unless you're a dramatic), you just need what is going to work for you.

  4. Set a budget. It can be too much fun and we can get carried away. There's nothing worse than seeing an item in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn.

  5. Ask yourself if you love it? If you do, that's great. Only by things you are certain you need or absolutely love. You know you will wear it if you love it.

  6. The last tip isn't always easy at this time of year as some stores close their changing rooms, however if you can try it on, DO! Save yourself the time of returning it. It’s not a bargain if you have to pay for fuel and parking twice.
