How to go from frumpy to fabulous in 5 easy steps

After all the fun of Christmas and new year are you feeling a little fat and frumpy like me? I’ve used up all my energy setting up and creating the magic that is Christmas, shopping, cooking, eating, drinking and then cleaning away the celebrations, going on a healthy eating and exercise kick?

So making the effort on ourselves to dress up and show up each day can seem like another chore on top of everything else, meaning we opt for boring frumpy dark or neutral clothes.

However in the grey tiered month of January, when you’ve cut out the naughty stuff and are trying to lose weight, don’t forget that your best colours and styles can give you a well needed energy boost and help keep you on track even when you have an off day.

I’m here to give you 5 top tips to lift your look and take you from frumpy to yummy, to give you the energy boost you may need at this time of year. No need to lose pounds first. In Fact looking good can help boost your mindset those days you may slip.

Use the following images to inspire your every day look.

Outfit for a light. High street clothes. Zara t-shirt, M&S Trousers, Sketcher trainers.

  1. Avoid black… use another dark colour to hide those areas you want to hide and team it with your favourite colour. Even if you haven’t had your colours done, often our favourite colours are one of our best colours and will help give your face that glow and fresh faced look we’re in need of. Warm - brown and coral / Cool - navy and pink/ soft grey green. See images.

2. Don’t drown in fabric that can make you look bigger. Make sure the hem stops on your best bits not the worst bits, eg untucked t-shirt on wide hips. Highlight your waist if you have one with body sculpting jeans or stretching waist wide leg trousers and half tuck for a casual look that helps show off your best bits but hide your tummy. Understanding your body shape is key here. Not everyone looks great tucking it in or wearing wide legs so here's a pic with a few suggestions.

3. Look at each garment. Get rid of faded, threadbare, items with holes or missing buttons. They won’t make you feel good about yourself or look your best self. Give your shoes and bags a once over too. Basically have a clear out and clean up in your wardrobe.

4. I used to talk about the importance of personal care. You don’t have to spend a fortune. Check in once a week and make sure your nails are good, have a face mask and scrub, use a hair mask (homemade or shop bought) and check your eye browser. These little things can have a huge impact on how we feel about ourselves.

5. Even when you're chucking on jeans, jumper and trainers… throw on some jewellery and lip colour at the very least. The right lip colour will help your eyes pop and your complexion glow. Jewellery is the cherry on top. If you're romantic or classic you probably won't go anywhere without it, but if you're natural you may forget or not bother, but it will help lift your look.
