How to wear the White Shirt

I recently bought a new white shirt specifically to wear with an old vest that I have kept for quite some time. I’ve had several shirts in the past, but this recent purchase made me reflect on how different styles and designs of shirts tend to suit different people and their unique preferences. A stylist once mentioned that everyone should always have at least one white shirt in their wardrobe. At the time, I didn’t fully agree with her statement, but I've since come to understand that what she truly meant was that everyone needs to find that perfect shirt that complements their individual style and fits them just right.

CUTS & STYLES

Shirts come in various cuts and fabrics, making it challenging to find the right one. Knowing your body shape helps you choose the best fit and material. If you haven't had a style analysis, here are some tips:

  • For pear, straight, or athletic shapes, choose tailored or peplum cuts with stiff fabrics.

  • For curvy hourglass, apple, or strawberry shapes, opt for soft, flowy, or silky materials.

I recomend weariing your size; don’t size up. If you struggle with the arms then opt for an oversize shirt in your size.

I’m a neat hour glass. In these three pictures above i’m wearing:

1: A tailoerd cut in a slightly stiff fabric. It highlights my waist. It’s a smart classic cut from Newlook.

2: This shirt is a silky relax cut. It’s soft shape glides over my curves. It can be dressed up or down and is from M&S.

3: This Zara shirt is an oversized cut with very blingy buttons. It’s rather dramatic and would look good at a special occasion or event.

STYLING

Once you understand your shape and scale you will know whether to tuck it in, do a french tuck or leave it out. In the case of these three shirst, the first one isn’t designed to tuck in and looks better out. It is the shortest shirt, so although i’m better tucking in to highlight my waist, the length and cut means I can leave it out. The french tuck is designed to higlight your waist and increase the leg length while discuising a tummy. It’s also very chic. If you are a rectangle or have a short body you may want to leave it untucked. Hoever if you have a waist, show it off.

COLOUR

When it comes to a white shirt, it’s important to know your colours.

Pure or brilliant white is sometimes too strong on some of us and will wash us out. If this is you, look for softwhite. Other option include Icy blue, Ivory, Rose White or Cream.

STYLE PERSONALITY

Once you have found your perfect cut and colour you need to work out your very own style personality. Are you romantic and pretty in silk or natural in easy iron cotton, would you be creative in pattern or dramatic in colour or maybe you are classic in a traditional cut or chic in something a little more expensive?

Even in a silky finish these three examples all offer a different style.

In the floral Zara shirt I look more romantic, In the green shirt I'm more dramatic and in the cream shirt I'm more natural.

STYLING & FINISHING TOUCHES

  • Wear a tank top, knitted vest or waistcoat. You can create a casual or smart look.

  • Add a blazer to the tank.waist coat for a layered look or just with a blazer.

  • Wear a tie. These days a ribbon is the most trendy way of doing these. Leave loose with a knot or finish as a bow to create a pussy bow shirt effect.

  • Wear a statement necklace, either button the shirt right up or leave the collar wide open.

  • Layer with a cardigan or baggy v-neck sweater

  • Try a bardot jumper to create a preppy look.

  • Opt for a coloured or pattern shirt and let it do all the talking.
