How to wear A Denim Dress?

As the weather warms up we are starting to look forward to wearing our spring summer wardrobe. The denim dress is not only a brilliant and versatile staple, it's going to be a trend this summer. But not all of us find it easy to find the perfect fit.

When you understand your body shape you can look for the right cut/shape for you. And trust me, there is more than one for everyone. Here's my top dress for each body shape. The Denim Dress

Consider the different denim fabrics. There are really thick, heavy and hard wearing denims that will be warm, stiff and bulky. Then there is softer, lighter denim. Second hand denim will have more flow and stretch as it’s been worn in. Then there are fabrics like tencel and chambray. These are great for a more curvy frame.

The Neat Hourglass.

The neat hourglass needs to show off and even accentuate her neat curves. Choose a dress with waist definition and look at wrap dresses or bodycon dresses.

The denim can be soft and floaty or a little on the crisp side to create more shape.

This one from Monsoon has a gorgeous shoulder detail. The Dark denim would suit a deep, bright or cool.

Full hourglass.

The key for these ladies is to keep the denim soft and floaty. Look for tencel or other lightweight denim dresses.

A bodycon or wrap dress will suit you. Avoid too much attention on the hip and shoulder area.

This light washed denim colour would be great on a light or cool.

The Pear

Look for fabric that skims the hip area and add detail to the top half. This Roman dress is an empire line which suits many Pears.

The puff sleeve delta will draw the eye up. Keep it soft and floaty. Consider buying separate tops and bottoms in a matching denim for a better fit.

This mid to light blue denim will suit a light, warm or smokey.

The Strawberry

Minimise your top half with darker denim or avoiding too much detail up top. Maximise the lower half with details like this tiered dress from Yours. Empire lines, maxi and skater dresses are your best fit.

This is a soft, warm and light colour but comes in charcoal black perfect for the deeps, cools and brights.

The Rectangle

Avoid highlighting your waist, instead show off your arms and legs. This shift dress from FatFace will work well on your frame.

Look for stiff denim. You could create the look of a dress using a waist coat with darting and straight or A line skirt as another option.

This is a soft, cool, light denim and some deeps.

The Apple

Apples look best in shapes that hang from the shoulders. Look for an Aline or trapeze shape dress, go for a maxi dress to elongate your shape. You may prefer a jumpsuit with little shape. This casula dress from Hush could be dressed up with heels and a longline cardi or duster jacket.

Athletic

You will find it far easier buying separates. A halter neck waistcoat will show off your shoulders and a frame skirt in a matching denim will balance you out. This is the perfect example at Next. Alternatively look for a high neck or peplum dress. The hush dress for an Apple may look good too.

This dark denim is good for Deeps, Cools, Brights and some lights.
